At our Beverly Hills practice, Dr. Joseph Stan, DDS, elevates essential cavity treatment into an art form. We use only natural-looking, tooth-colored composite fillings that bond directly to your tooth structure. This modern approach is minimally invasive, preserving more of your healthy enamel and providing a durable, seamless repair that is both strong and undetectable, combining expert restorative care with aesthetic excellence.

We specialize in halting decay and restoring your tooth’s natural shape and strength with a focus on your long-term oral health and a beautifully uniform smile.

What is a Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a common restorative procedure used to repair a tooth damaged by decay or a minor fracture. The dentist first removes the decayed or weakened portion of the tooth, cleans the area, and then fills the prepared cavity with a durable material. This process restores the tooth’s original shape, strength, and function while stopping the decay from progressing. Today, most fillings are made from tooth-colored composite resin, which bonds securely to the natural tooth and is virtually invisible, providing a strong, aesthetic, and long-lasting repair.

Are You a Candidate for a Dental Filling?

The most common reason for needing a filling is tooth decay (caries). You may be a candidate if you experience:

Ideal candidates are patients with small to moderate-sized cavities or minor fractures. During your examination, Dr. Stan will use digital X-rays and advanced diagnostic tools to detect decay early, often before you feel any discomfort. If the decay is too extensive, he may recommend a more robust restoration like an inlay, onlay, or dental crown.

The Dental Filling Procedure

Dr. Stan utilizes modern techniques and materials to ensure your filling procedure is efficient, comfortable, and yields a superior, long-lasting result.

  • Step 1: Diagnosis & Anesthesia: After confirming the need for a filling, the tooth and surrounding gum are gently numbed with local anesthesia to ensure you are completely comfortable throughout the procedure.
  • Step 2: Decay Removal: Using precise, conservative techniques, Dr. Stan removes all the decayed and compromised tooth structure, leaving behind only healthy, strong enamel and dentin.
  • Step 3: Tooth Preparation & Bonding: The prepared tooth is cleaned and conditioned. A tooth-colored adhesive (bonding agent) is applied. This creates a microscopically strong link between your natural tooth and the composite filling material.

Composite Fillings vs. Traditional Amalgam (Silver) Fillings

We proudly offer only the most modern, health-conscious, and aesthetic options.
Feature Tooth-Colored Composite Fillings Traditional Amalgam (Silver) Fillings
Aesthetics Blends invisibly with natural tooth color. Metallic gray; very noticeable.
Tooth Preservation Minimally invasive. Bonds to tooth, requiring less removal of healthy structure. Requires more tooth structure to be removed to create mechanical retention.
Safety & Biocompatibility BPA-free, biocompatible resin. Mercury-free. Contains a mixture of metals, including mercury (about 50%).
Sensitivity Bonds to tooth, which can help insulate against temperature changes. Metal expands/contracts with temperature, potentially causing sensitivity.
Durability Lasts 7-10+ years with proper care. Suitable for small to mid-sized restorations. Very durable (10-15+ years) but brittle; can crack teeth over time.

Benefits of Modern Tooth-Colored Fillings

Choosing composite resin fillings at our practice offers clear advantages for your health and smile.

  • Aesthetic Excellence: The filling disappears into your smile, maintaining your natural appearance, a critical consideration in cosmetic-conscious Beverly Hills.
  • Conservative Dentistry: The bonding process allows us to preserve maximum healthy tooth structure, which is the best foundation for long-term oral health.
  • Immediate Function: Composite fillings harden instantly under the curing light, so you can eat and drink normally shortly after your appointment.
  • Versatility: Used for both front and back teeth, and can also repair minor chips and cracks (cosmetic bonding).
  • Strength & Durability: Modern composites are highly durable and withstand the pressure of chewing, especially when placed by an expert.
  • Mercury-Free & Biocompatible: Aligns with a health-conscious lifestyle, free from the concerns associated with metal amalgam fillings.

I went to see Dr. Stan to determine if I was a good candidate for an implant because I have a crown on my front tooth that was coming off and my current dentist told me I needed an implant or a bridge and they couldn’t repair it. Dr Stan was able to re-bond my crown and he explained thoroughly the procedure for the implant for my particular tooth and situation. He didn’t feel that it was necessary at this time and that if this crown comes off again, we can redo the crown instead of doing an implant. He did say that it would most likely last a few more years. I am so happy that I went To see Dr. Stan, I absolutely loved him. He made me feel so at ease and so comfortable to be at the dentist. His work was impeccable and he is so precise. In fact, he made my crown feel better than it ever was. Dr Stan and the staff literally made me feel as if I was a part of their family. Olga and Rachel were gems. Thank you so very much for such a wonderful experience.

Dr. Stan was my dentist almost 30 years ago. He did wonderful and terrific work. After 29-30 years, I had to change up a gold crown he did. (#19) Can't ask for better work than that, almost three decades without issue. Great job Dr. Stan. (I have since moved)

It was over 10 years that I hadn’t comfortably and happily smiled. About two months ago I went to see Dr Joseph Stan for a consult. Going in I was feeling scared and anxious. The consult went a lot smoother than expected. The staff was amazing. They made sure I was comfortable. I honestly felt like I was at home. Usually at the dentist I am hating life but just the opposite here. About two weeks after my consult I went in for my procedure and it went amazing! I am so happy I chose Dr Stan and his team. Not only is he an amazing dentist, his work is like art. I love love my new smile. I would never imagined the entire experience from start to finish would be this easy and would make me so happy. I CAN NOT STOP SMILING!! 😊 Thank you so much Dr Stan and all of the team at the Smile Boutique!

FAQs

With excellent oral hygiene and regular checkups, a composite filling can last 7 to 10 years, and often longer. Its longevity depends on its size, location, and your dental habits.

No. The area is completely numbed with local anesthesia before the procedure begins. You may feel pressure or vibration, but you should not feel pain. After the procedure, it’s common to have some mild sensitivity for a few days.
Early cavities often have no symptoms. This is why regular checkups are vital. As decay progresses, you may experience sensitivity to sweets or temperature, visible discoloration, or a toothache. Dr. Stan can detect decay long before you feel it.
Yes. This is a common procedure known as amalgam replacement. Dr. Stan can safely remove your old silver fillings and replace them with tooth-colored composite, improving both the health and appearance of your teeth.
You can eat as soon as the numbness wears off, but be cautious as you get used to the new shape. Practice excellent oral hygiene: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day. Attend your regular cleanings so we can monitor the filling.
