A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped “cap” placed over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth. Its purpose is to fully encase the visible portion of the tooth, restoring its original strength, shape, size, and appearance. As one of the most common and versatile restorative procedures in dentistry, a crown offers a durable, long-lasting solution that protects your oral health while enhancing the aesthetics of your smile.
At the Beverly Hills practice of Dr. Joseph Stan, DDS, we craft dental crowns that do more than just repair teeth, they are artistically designed to blend seamlessly with your natural smile, functioning perfectly and looking flawless.
When is a Dental Crown Needed?
- To Protect a Weakened Tooth: A tooth can be weakened by decay, a large fracture, or a massive filling. A crown holds the tooth together, preventing it from breaking.
- To Restore a Damaged Tooth: For teeth that are severely worn down, broken, or cracked, a crown can restore their original form and function.
- To Support a Tooth After a Root Canal: A root canal treatment removes the tooth's nerve and pulp, which can make the tooth brittle. A crown is essential to protect and strengthen it post-procedure.
- To Cover a Dental Implant: A crown is the visible, functional part attached to a dental implant post, serving as a complete replacement for a missing tooth.
- For Cosmetic Enhancement: Crowns can mask severe, intrinsic discoloration, hide misshapen teeth, and create a uniform, beautiful smile.
- To Anchor a Dental Bridge: When replacing missing teeth, crowns are placed on the adjacent "abutment" teeth to securely hold a dental bridge in place.
Types of Dental Crowns: Choosing the Right Material
We offer a variety of crown materials to suit your specific functional needs and aesthetic goals. During your consultation, Dr. Stan will help you select the best option.
Type of Crown Material | Best For |
Porcelain/Ceramic Crowns | Front teeth where a natural, translucent appearance is most important. |
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) | A strong, reliable option for back teeth, offering strength and a good aesthetic. |
Zirconia Crowns | High-strength needs for both front and back teeth. Excellent durability and great aesthetics. |
Gold Crowns | Exceptional durability for out-of-sight molars. Ideal for patients who grind their teeth. |
Same-Day Crowns (CEREC®) | One-visit convenience without the need for a temporary crown. |
The Dental Crown Procedure: What to Expect
We utilize advanced technology to ensure your crown procedure is precise, comfortable, and efficient.
Step 1: Consultation & Examination
Dr. Stan conducts a thorough examination, which may include digital X-rays or a 3D cone beam scan, to assess the tooth’s condition and determine if a crown is the ideal solution.
Step 2: Tooth Preparation
The tooth is gently reshaped by removing a small amount of enamel to make room for the crown. If there is decay, it will be removed, and the tooth will be built up to support the crown.
- Step 3: Digital Impression We use a state-of-the-art intraoral scanner to take a highly accurate digital impression of your prepared tooth. This is more comfortable than traditional putty impressions and provides superior precision for crafting your crown.
- Step 4: Temporary Crown Placement While your permanent crown is being custom-crafted by a master dental lab, a temporary crown is placed to protect the prepared tooth.
- Step 5: Permanent Crown Placement Once your final crown is ready (typically in about two weeks), you return for a second appointment. Dr. Stan will remove the temporary crown, check the fit, shade, and bite of the new crown, and then permanently cement it into place.
Treatment Duration:
- Traditional Crowns: Typically completed in two visits over 2–3 weeks.
- Same-Day CEREC® Crowns: If you’re a candidate, your entire crown can be designed, milled, and placed in a single 2-3 hour appointment.
The Benefits of Choosing a Dental Crown
Investing in a dental crown provides significant advantages for your oral health and quality of life.
- Restores Full Chewing Function: A crown allows you to bite and chew comfortably and without fear.
- Strengthens and Protects: It shields a vulnerable tooth from further decay, damage, or fracture.
- Enhances Your Smile Aesthetically: Modern crowns are meticulously color-matched and shaped to be indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
- Provides a Long-Term Solution: With proper care, a high-quality crown can last 15 years or longer.
- Improves Overall Oral Health: By preserving a natural tooth, a crown helps maintain your jawbone health and proper tooth alignment.

- If sensitivity persists, use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
- Maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine.
- If you clench or grind your teeth at night (bruxism), ask us about getting a custom night guard to protect your crown and your natural teeth from excessive force.
