A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped “cap” placed over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth. Its purpose is to fully encase the visible portion of the tooth, restoring its original strength, shape, size, and appearance. As one of the most common and versatile restorative procedures in dentistry, a crown offers a durable, long-lasting solution that protects your oral health while enhancing the aesthetics of your smile.

At the Beverly Hills practice of Dr. Joseph Stan, DDS, we craft dental crowns that do more than just repair teeth, they are artistically designed to blend seamlessly with your natural smile, functioning perfectly and looking flawless.

When is a Dental Crown Needed?

Dr. Stan may recommend a dental crown for several reasons, all aimed at preserving your natural tooth structure and preventing further damage.

Types of Dental Crowns: Choosing the Right Material

We offer a variety of crown materials to suit your specific functional needs and aesthetic goals. During your consultation, Dr. Stan will help you select the best option.

Type of Crown Material

Best For

Porcelain/Ceramic Crowns

Front teeth where a natural, translucent appearance is most important.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)

A strong, reliable option for back teeth, offering strength and a good aesthetic.

Zirconia Crowns

High-strength needs for both front and back teeth. Excellent durability and great aesthetics.

Gold Crowns

Exceptional durability for out-of-sight molars. Ideal for patients who grind their teeth.

Same-Day Crowns (CEREC®)

One-visit convenience without the need for a temporary crown.

The Dental Crown Procedure: What to Expect

We utilize advanced technology to ensure your crown procedure is precise, comfortable, and efficient.

Step 1: Consultation & Examination

Dr. Stan conducts a thorough examination, which may include digital X-rays or a 3D cone beam scan, to assess the tooth’s condition and determine if a crown is the ideal solution.

Step 2: Tooth Preparation

The tooth is gently reshaped by removing a small amount of enamel to make room for the crown. If there is decay, it will be removed, and the tooth will be built up to support the crown.

Treatment Duration:

  • Traditional Crowns: Typically completed in two visits over 2–3 weeks.
  • Same-Day CEREC® Crowns: If you’re a candidate, your entire crown can be designed, milled, and placed in a single 2-3 hour appointment.

The Benefits of Choosing a Dental Crown

Investing in a dental crown provides significant advantages for your oral health and quality of life.

  • Restores Full Chewing Function: A crown allows you to bite and chew comfortably and without fear.
  • Strengthens and Protects: It shields a vulnerable tooth from further decay, damage, or fracture.
  • Enhances Your Smile Aesthetically: Modern crowns are meticulously color-matched and shaped to be indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
  • Provides a Long-Term Solution: With proper care, a high-quality crown can last 15 years or longer.
  • Improves Overall Oral Health: By preserving a natural tooth, a crown helps maintain your jawbone health and proper tooth alignment.

Cost of Dental Crowns

The cost of a dental crown depends on the material used, the complexity of the procedure, and the technology employed.
Type of Crown Average Cost Range (Per Tooth)
Porcelain or Ceramic Crown $1,000 – $3,000
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) $900 – $2,500
Zirconia Crown $1,200 – $2,800
Gold Alloy Crown $1,200 – $2,500
Same-Day (CEREC®) Crown $1,200 – $3,000

Factors Affecting Cost:

  • The type of material selected.
  • The location of the tooth in your mouth.
  • Whether additional procedures (like a root canal or build-up) are needed.
  • The level of skill and experience of the dentist.

I went to see Dr. Stan to determine if I was a good candidate for an implant because I have a crown on my front tooth that was coming off and my current dentist told me I needed an implant or a bridge and they couldn’t repair it. Dr Stan was able to re-bond my crown and he explained thoroughly the procedure for the implant for my particular tooth and situation. He didn’t feel that it was necessary at this time and that if this crown comes off again, we can redo the crown instead of doing an implant. He did say that it would most likely last a few more years. I am so happy that I went To see Dr. Stan, I absolutely loved him. He made me feel so at ease and so comfortable to be at the dentist. His work was impeccable and he is so precise. In fact, he made my crown feel better than it ever was. Dr Stan and the staff literally made me feel as if I was a part of their family. Olga and Rachel were gems. Thank you so very much for such a wonderful experience.

Dr. Stan was my dentist almost 30 years ago. He did wonderful and terrific work. After 29-30 years, I had to change up a gold crown he did. (#19) Can't ask for better work than that, almost three decades without issue. Great job Dr. Stan. (I have since moved)

It was over 10 years that I hadn’t comfortably and happily smiled. About two months ago I went to see Dr Joseph Stan for a consult. Going in I was feeling scared and anxious. The consult went a lot smoother than expected. The staff was amazing. They made sure I was comfortable. I honestly felt like I was at home. Usually at the dentist I am hating life but just the opposite here. About two weeks after my consult I went in for my procedure and it went amazing! I am so happy I chose Dr Stan and his team. Not only is he an amazing dentist, his work is like art. I love love my new smile. I would never imagined the entire experience from start to finish would be this easy and would make me so happy. I CAN NOT STOP SMILING!! 😊 Thank you so much Dr Stan and all of the team at the Smile Boutique!

Treat it like a natural tooth. Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss once a day (paying extra attention around the crown margin), and avoid using your teeth as tools to open packages. Regular professional cleanings and exams are essential to monitor the health of the crown and the underlying tooth.
